Gaming Industry Hit by Early 2025 Layoffs, Over 150 Developers Affected

The gaming industry has been shaken by a wave of layoffs just two weeks into the new year, with over 150 game developers losing their jobs. The cuts, announced by several prominent studios, underscore ongoing challenges faced by the sector.

Sweden-based Toadman Interactive ceased operations, leaving 69 employees unemployed after failing to secure new contracts. Vancouver’s Piranha Games, makers of MechWarrior 5: Clans, laid off 38 staff as part of a restructuring effort following weaker-than-expected sales.

South Korean developer Netmarble F&C reduced its workforce by 25%, affecting around 20 team members from Demis Re:Born. Meanwhile, UK-based Freejam, creators of Robocraft 2, shuttered operations citing adverse market conditions.

Layoffs were also reported at Rocksteady Studios and Splash Damage, linked to canceled projects and underwhelming performance. The trend signals a grim start for an industry grappling with financial and operational turbulence.

Krafton is Pioneering AI Teammates That Talk Back and Adapt in Real-Time

South Korean gaming giant Krafton has partnered with Nvidia to introduce smarter AI characters in its popular titles, including PUBG and the upcoming life simulation game, inZOI. This collaboration was unveiled at CES 2025, showcasing a groundbreaking "Co-Playable Character" (CPC) technology that enhances player interaction.

The CPC, powered by Nvidia's on-device Small Language Model (SLM), allows AI companions to engage in dynamic conversations and strategic cooperation with players. Unlike traditional non-playable characters (NPCs), these AI companions can adapt their behavior based on real-time interactions, providing a more immersive experience.

Krafton's CEO, Changhan Kim, emphasized the transformative potential of this technology, stating it aims to set new benchmarks in gaming. The integration of CPCs is expected to revolutionize gameplay dynamics, making AI characters feel like genuine teammates rather than scripted entities.
