In the first LAN of the 2024 competitive Dota 2 season, BetBoom Dacha Dubai 2024, Aurora, the sole Southeast Asian (SEA) team, has been eliminated. Aurora is out of the tournament as one of the first in Group A, along with Virtus.pro. Although the team still has a series against Team Falcons to play in the group stage, it does not have enough wins to move up in the points table. The team experimented with various playstyles across the four series it competed in so far but only secured two victories, often finding itself outmatched from the outset in many of the games that ended in a lost cause.
Aurora gets eliminated from BetBoom Dacha Dubai in the group stage
BetBoom Dacha Dubai's day four saw Aurora arrive with the possibility of elimination. Not only did the team need certain other teams to lose games, but it also needed to beat Team Liquid in its Bo2 series.
Unfortunately for Aurora, results did not go its way, making the road to playoffs all the more difficult. This made the team's series against Liquid even more crucial since it needed a 2-0 victory to be in the event.
It began on a promising note, as Aurora easily won game one. Armel "Armel" Tabios stole the show with his immaculate performance on Death Prophet. However, the momentum could not be maintained in game two, as a slower tempo forced teamfights to become essential, where Liquid's draft thrived and the team was able to win. Aurora needed to be ahead to snowball, but this did not occur.
Throughout the tournament, Aurora had mainly sluggish beginnings, and when it attempted to play its typical slow paced draft, the execution was lacking. Some attempts were made to play faster drafts, such as Luna carry, but apart from one game, the opponents appeared prepared for the switch.
Aurora has had a tumultuous few weeks as it qualified for DreamLeague Season 22 in the qualifiers but it is did not look like the top SEA team in the ESL One Birmingham 2024 qualifiers, finishing 7th-8th.
Despite the recent return of coach Lee "SunBhie" Jeong-jae, who had taken a break from professional Dota 2, the team's performance at BetBoom Dacha has also been subpar.
Aurora will want to go back to the drawing board, and identify and correct problems before looking to return to form during DreamLeague Season 22, which takes place later this month. As part of its final series at BetBoom Dacha Dubai, it takes place against Team Falcons on 8th Feb 2024.
