Krafton Chairman Highlights India’s Strategic Importance Amidst BGMI Success

Krafton Chairman and Founder CEO Chang Byung-gyu Sohn emphasized India’s strategic importance during an interview with CNBC-TV18, citing the country’s young, smartphone-equipped population as a key driver for the company’s growth. Reflecting on the global gaming landscape, Sohn noted that the success rate of games is much lower than that of movies, requiring more trial and loyal user bases to transform a title into a mainstream hit.

Sohn highlighted that Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), Krafton’s flagship mobile game, has garnered 300 million downloads since its launch three years ago. He linked the game’s success to the country’s growing economy, stating that the size of the gaming industry cannot exceed the overall size of the economy. With India’s economy poised for continued growth, Sohn expressed confidence that the gaming sector will expand in parallel.

"India is our top priority strategic market," Sohn said, underscoring Krafton’s heavy investment in the region. He also acknowledged the unique energy of Indian youth, which he observed during visits to Delhi and Bangalore, describing it as a reflection of the nation’s economic potential.

India ranks within Krafton’s top five countries by revenue, positioning it as a crucial market for the gaming giant amidst global skepticism of the region’s profitability.
