Gaming Giant Krafton Plans R&D Hub in India

PUBG and BGMI maker Krafton is set to establish a research and development facility in India by next year to create games that resonate with Indian culture. Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO of KRAFTON India, shared this development, as reported by The Hindu. The company is considering Bangalore and Pune as potential locations for the new facility.

Speaking at the IDGS Gaming Conclave, Mr. Sohn highlighted the importance of building a robust development team in India to cater to the country’s growing digital entertainment market. “We will continue to launch new games for the Indian market, either sourcing from outside or from India. We will do our best to set up a good quality development team based in India and develop quality games based on Indian culture,” he said.

India is one of KRAFTON's top three markets, fueled by a burgeoning demand for digital content. However, Mr. Sohn noted challenges such as a lack of infrastructure and educational support in the gaming sector.

KRAFTON has already invested $160 million in Indian startups since 2021 and plans to invest an additional $150 million over the next few years. The company’s KRAFTON India Gaming Incubator program aims to support local game development talent with funding and mentorship. Mr. Sohn emphasized the need for government support to improve educational infrastructure and facilitate the growth of the gaming industry in India.
