The company reported a remarkable revenue of $515.53 million for the second quarter of 2024, elevating its first-half earnings to $1.002 billion—an 82.63% increase compared to last year. Crunchyroll Eyes India as a Major Growth Market in Anime Industry

Crunchyroll, a leading anime streaming service, is setting its sights on India as a key market for growth, according to Markus Gerdemann, Senior Vice President of Marketing. In a recent interview with MediaNews4U, Gerdemann highlighted India's status as a major player in the global anime scene, noting its vibrant youth culture and burgeoning audience. "As the second-largest global anime audience after China, India will represent 60% of the increase in anime interest over the next few years," Gerdemann stated.

Crunchyroll currently offers over 800 anime titles in India, including more than 80 shows dubbed in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil, which account for 65% of the platform's total dubbed viewership. To further expand its reach, Crunchyroll has collaborated with Indian celebrities like Tiger Shroff and Rashmika Mandanna to boost anime's popularity locally.

Gerdemann pointed out that anime resonates particularly well with young, diverse audiences, with over 42% of Gen Z watching anime weekly. "Nearly two-thirds of these viewers emotionally connect more with anime than traditional media," he noted, highlighting how fans find "comfort, strength, and excitement in its unique storylines and characters." Unlike many other forms of entertainment, anime fans tend to maintain their passion over time, often passing their love for the medium to the next generation.

Did You Know?

Kirby, the lovable pink puffball from Nintendo's popular video game series, was named after a lawyer who played a crucial role in the company's history. The character's namesake, John Kirby, was an esteemed attorney who successfully defended Nintendo in a pivotal legal battle during the early 1980s. The case revolved around Universal City Studios' claim that Nintendo's Donkey Kong video game infringed on the rights of their King Kong franchise.

John Kirby's strategic legal arguments not only led to a decisive victory for Nintendo but also set a precedent for video game intellectual property rights. His defense demonstrated that Universal had previously argued that King Kong was in the public domain, thereby undermining their own case. This victory was instrumental in establishing Nintendo as a major player in the gaming industry.

In gratitude for his efforts, Nintendo named their newly created character Kirby in his honor. John Kirby received a unique gift: a $30,000 USD sailboat named "Donkey Kong," complete with an engraved plaque recognizing his contribution to Nintendo's success. Today, Kirby remains a beloved character, symbolizing not only fun and adventure but also a legacy of legal ingenuity and triumph.
