Nintendo's Q1 Profits Drop Amidst Slowdown in Switch Sales
Nintendo has reported a significant downturn in its Q1 financial results, with operating profit plummeting by 70.6% year-on-year to ¥54.5 billion ($376.3 million). This decline coincides with a 46.5% drop in sales, amounting to ¥246.6 billion ($1.7 billion), predominantly from the company's video games division, which saw a nearly identical decrease of 46.4%.
The decline in Nintendo's performance is largely attributed to reduced sales of Switch hardware and software as the company shifts focus toward its next console. This quarter featured few new releases, primarily remastered titles like Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD. Although each sold over one million units, these figures pale compared to last year’s blockbuster release, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which sold 18.5 million units in its launch quarter.
Adding to the muted quarter is the absence of a major film release like last year's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, contributing to a 53.8% decline in mobile and IP-related business revenue to ¥14.7 billion ($101.6 million). Despite the unclear impact of its mobile gaming segment, Nintendo attributes the revenue drop mainly to decreased earnings from the movie, now available on streaming services and Blu-ray.
The downturn extends to Nintendo's ordinary profit, which fell to ¥113.4 billion ($784.4 million), and profit attributable to owners, which decreased by 55.3% to ¥80.9 billion ($559.6 million). Notably, 74.2% of game sales occurred outside Japan, contributing ¥183.1 billion ($1.3 billion) to the quarter's earnings.

Roblox Exceeds Q2 Expectations with Rising Revenue and User Growth
Roblox's Q2 2024 earnings report reveals a strong performance, surpassing expectations with a 31% year-over-year revenue increase to $893.5 million and a 22% rise in bookings to $955.2 million. Average daily active users (DAUs) also grew by 21% to 79.5 million, with significant growth in Japan and India, up 56% and 57% respectively. The company reported 17.4 billion hours of user engagement and raised its full-year revenue projections to $3.49-3.54 billion. Despite the positive results, Roblox shares fell over 5% due to investor expectations for higher bookings. Additionally, CFO Mike Guthrie announced his departure, staying through the succession process. CEO Dave Baszucki emphasized the platform's global appeal and commitment to improving user experiences.
Sega’s Gaming Division Bolsters Q2 Amid Overall Sales Decline
Sega reported a 3.2% year-on-year decline in net sales to ¥104.7 billion ($710.5 million) for the quarter ending June 30, 2024, but its video games segment performed robustly. Full game sales increased nearly 40%, generating ¥15.1 billion ($102.5 million), while the Entertainment Contents division, including video games, toys, and animation, saw a 34% sales increase to ¥72.7 billion ($493.3 million). This division exceeded expectations with strong DLC sales and favorable foreign exchange impacts. Despite a 43% drop in the pachislot and pachinko division, Sega's acquisition of Rovio and strong performances from titles like Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance and Persona 5 Royal boosted profits. Upcoming releases, including Sonic X Shadow Generations and the third Sonic The Hedgehog movie, are expected to drive future growth. Additionally, Sega is expanding its Gaming Business through acquisitions, including US-based GAN Limited and Netherlands-based Stakelogic, focusing on casino and iGaming products.

The Royal Mint extracts approximately 450kg of gold annually from electronic waste, valued at about £27 million. This initiative marks a bold step into e-waste processing, using innovative technology at its facility in Llantrisant, Wales. Processing around 4,000 tonnes of e-waste each year, the Mint transforms discarded circuit boards into valuable resources.
The process begins by heating the boards to remove components, which are then sorted to isolate gold-bearing materials. These are subjected to a unique chemical process, conducted at room temperature, which efficiently leaches gold without the high energy and toxic chemicals traditionally required.
In response to dwindling cash usage, this venture diversifies the Royal Mint’s operations, safeguarding jobs by reallocating workers to e-waste processing. CEO Anne Jessopp emphasizes this strategic shift, ensuring the Mint remains economically viable while contributing to sustainability.
Beyond gold recovery, the facility explores uses for other extracted materials like aluminum and copper, with potential applications in construction. This initiative aligns with the UK’s need to manage its substantial e-waste output—ranking second globally per capita, according to the UN’s 2024 report—while emphasizing the importance of urban mining in a circular economy.
