Inside Intel's Struggles: Declining Fortunes and Rising Legal Challenges
Intel's stock plummeted 34.6% this week following a disappointing earnings call, underscoring the tech giant's ongoing challenges. CEO Pat Gelsinger announced a 1% revenue decline for Q2 2024 compared to last year and slashed third-quarter forecasts by $1 billion. The company's chip manufacturing division has been hit hard, with $7 billion in losses this year and a 31% revenue drop from 2022.
In response, Intel is implementing significant cost-cutting measures, including reducing its workforce by over 15,000 positions, accounting for 15% of its employees. Despite these efforts, doubts persist about Intel's ability to regain its industry-leading status amid intensifying competition from Nvidia and AMD.
Compounding Intel's difficulties are legal challenges stemming from recent stability issues with its latest CPUs, prompting potential class-action lawsuits. Shareholders have also filed a suit, alleging misleading statements that resulted in a $32 billion market value loss.
Our feature story investigates Intel's decline over the past decade, examining how the company lost its edge in innovation and market share. The report explores the internal and external factors contributing to this downturn, including missed opportunities and strategic missteps.

Did You Know
YouTube is introducing a new feature allowing users to submit "notes" under videos, providing context or corrections, similar to Twitter's Community Notes. This feature aims to address misinformation or unclear content by allowing users to highlight inaccuracies directly beneath videos. The experimental notes will be written by users, with third-party evaluators assessing their helpfulness during the pilot program. If successful, contributors may eventually rate notes themselves.
Approved notes will appear prominently in a blue box under the video's title, which can be expanded to read in full. This initiative was announced on the YouTube blog in June, and select users are now being invited to participate in testing. Google encourages testers to submit notes on "videos you find inaccurate or unclear," emphasizing that notes should be original and provide clarity or context, rather than quoting sources verbatim.
