Gabbi Talks About His Learnings From Playing in Europe

In Group A of ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023, Blacklist International, the sole Southeast Asian (SEA) representative, has started strong. In the wake of the team's win over Wawitas Sagazes on the first day, offlaner Kim "Gabbi" Santos discussed his learnings based on his experience in Europe. Before joining Blacklist, Gabbi played for Entity for four months where he developed his overall understanding of the game along with his ability to maintain composure during in-game conversations. In addition, the player discussed playing LAN in SEA again and his recent rivalry with Wawitas Sagazes' midlaner Gonzalo "DarkMago" Herrera.

Gabbi credits Europe for teaching him composure and enhancing his game-reading skills

Having defeated Wawitas Sagazes in the opening series of ESL One Kuala Lumpur with relative ease, Gabbi came for the post-match winner’s interview. Unlike European teams, which are more composed when communicating in-game, SEA teams exhibit a different atmosphere when playing.

“What I learned from Europe is how to read the game better and be more chill about the comms and about the map as well. In SEA, our players are more hyped about communication on how to play the game.”

Among his team members, Gabbi identified the support duo as one of the more vocal players. “How our comms is, maybe Carlo or Tims,” he said.

Gabbi represented Entity in Europe from July to October 2023. His recruitment was hotly questioned due to his lack of experience playing in not only Europe but also as an offlaner. Entity had a rough start with him, finishing last in the Riyadh Masters, but impressed the community by winning the International 12 qualifier. At TI12, the team managed a middling 9th-12th finish.

Meanwhile, for Gabbi, a comfort of returning to SEA, after spending the latter half of the 2023 competitive season in Europe, is that he has to travel for only a short time for this ESL event.

“Of course, it’s better for us because we just need to fly for just three hours to go from the Philippines to Malaysia. When we are playing in the US or around Europe, you need to travel the whole day just to play the tournament.”

The player also shared his thoughts on his team Tipping DarkMago several times throughout the series. During a ranked game a few days ago, Gabbi and DarkMago exchanged words towards the end of which the former said, "hope you win against me at LAN, seeu."

“Not really, I don’t feel anything. I just want to destroy them because their two cores are too toxic in pubs. That’s why. That’s why I am tipping them,” he said during the interview.

Blacklist International's second series on the first day at ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023 was a 1-1 tie versus Azure Ray. The SEA squad is currently tied for first place in the points table with Azure and will face Gaimin Gladiators and Team Secret on the second day - a crucial one in terms of qualifying for the playoffs.
