In a riveting clash marking the commencement of ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023, Gaimin Gladiators and BetBoom Team engaged in an exhilarating battle, setting the tone for the tournament. While Gaimin Gladiators dominated Game 1, the spotlight turned to BetBoom Team's daring choice of Windrunner as a carry against Gaimin Gladiator's Terrorblade, resulting in an unexpected victory.
Post-match, Kevin "Purge" Godec caught up with Egor "Nightfall" Grigorenko, BetBoom Team's carry player, to gain insights into his thoughts on the tournament and the current competitive system.
During the interview, Purge inquired about the perceived pressure at events, particularly in light of the absence of the need to qualify for the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC). Nightfall candidly suggested that the new system is a lot better compared to the old one.
Nightfall Comments About the Removal of DPC
In an after game interview with Purge, Nightfall responded, acknowledging a notable decrease in pressure compared to previous setups. He highlighted the contrasting atmosphere at ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023, emphasizing the sense of calm and reduced stress among the participating teams. He further added, “You can really feel like all teams were stressed out before; you just kind of feel chill now."
Expressing his preference for the current system, Nightfall conveyed his dissatisfaction with the previous structure involving Majors and DPC leagues. He said, "It is kind of boring to play DPC and only against your region."
He found the previous approach somewhat monotonous, where teams were confined to playing against opponents from their own region. Acknowledging this change in the system he remarked “I really like this change, and I'm glad that tournaments like this are gonna happen more."
Expressing dissatisfaction with the previous structure involving Majors and DPC leagues, Nightfall remarked, "I like this system now better." He found the previous approach somewhat monotonous, emphasizing his preference for the current format, which allows teams to face opponents from various regions.
Valve announced the discontinuation of DPC earlier this year and there was a lot of skepticism and doubt regarding the system replacing the DPC.
Pro players like Team Spirit’s Illya "Yatoro" Mulyarchuk expressed his dissatisfaction with the discontinuation of DPC recently. He believed that Valve should have simply improved upon the existing DPC system instead of scrapping it. While, Johan "N0tail" Sundstein praised Valve for being more transparent about the new system, and he expressed his hopes for a more fair and competitive Dota 2 scene.
