Former LoL Worlds Champion Toyz Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison for Selling Marijuana

Former Worlds champion Kurtis Lau "Toyz" Wai-kin, who was the mid-laner for Taipei Assassins in 2012 and was a part of that year’s World Championship-winning roster, has reportedly been sentenced to four years and two months in prison for drug trafficking, according to a news report. The verdict was pronounced in the first instance on the morning of 24th November. Yahoo News Hong Kong further stated that Toyz has a chance to appeal the case but has been convicted after his initial arrest in 2021. It said, “The Taichung District Court ruled that he was convicted of 6 crimes and sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in prison. The case can be appealed.” He was arrested in 2021 on suspicion of drug trafficking by the New Taipei police.

A timeline of events leading up to Toyz’s sentencing

In 2021, authorities found marijuana in Toyz’s home with evidence suggesting that he had stored the drugs with the intention of selling. Toyz was arrested in New Taipei after a search warrant was issued against him and he was charged with drug trafficking. Following this, he was taken into custody by the police.

Notably, marijuana is classified as a Class 2 illegal drug, according to the Taiwan Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act. Those intending to distribute a Class 2 narcotic can face up to seven years of jail time and a fine of up to five million New Taiwan dollars. After finding marijuana at his residence, the police petitioned the courts to keep Toyz in custody longer for further questioning.

Inven Global reported that Toyz was accused of forming a drug syndicate with some of his friends in the latter part of 2019 and selling products with THC [Tetrahydrocannabinol] on the internet. He was caught after Taiwanese police posed as drug buyers and seven of his other associates were also arrested.

Following this, on 16th June 2022, Toyz pleaded guilty to drug trafficking in a Taiwanese court. He also apologized and urged the public to stay away from drugs. Toyz’s lawyer, Lin Tingyang, pointed out that the player had only a middle school education and that he hails from Hong Kong, and travels a lot between the two places. He argued that he was not familiar with the Taiwan laws as a result.

Those who are unfamiliar with Toyz’s story as a pro player should note that he played League of Legends professionally for Taipei Assassins (TPA). He was the team’s mid-laner and the team lifted the Season 2 World Championship. He was well-known in the community for his skillful Orianna and Anivia plays. Honoring TPA’s Worlds victory, Riot Games released a skinline for the squad and Toyz has a TPA Orianna skin in the game. Currently, TPA Orianna is a Legacy skin in League of Legends and cannot be acquired by the players from the store. However, it can be crafted through the Hextech crafting process or through Mystery Gifting.
