Splatoon 3 Beats Valorant and League of Legends Esports Viewership in Japan

Japan has some of the most hardcore esports fans in the world but the audience is not shy of giving new esports titles an opportunity to entertain. Splatoon 3 is a fun third-person “shooter” that was recently released by Nintendo and it has taken the number one spot in terms of esports viewership in the country. What’s even more surprising is that the game is available only on the Nintendo Switch, compared to other esports titles that are multi-platform.

Splatoon 3 Start Dash Cup had more viewership than Worlds 2022

While it comes as no surprise that Splatoon 3 beat out events like the Valorant Champions Tour: East Asia Finals, the fact that it overtook League of Legends World Championship 2022 comes as a shock. The Splatoon event had 86,585 peak viewers while Worlds saw a peak of 63,612 according to a report by Escharts.

The Street Fighter League Pro-JP 2022 event saw over 39,200 peak viewers tune into the event which is also a record by itself. The highest peak viewership for Street Fighter was 37,300 during EVO 2022’s Street Fighter championship.

Most Popular Tournaments in Japan - October 2022

These numbers might sound surprising if you are a fan from a country that has titles like League of Legends, Valorant, or CS:GO as your most-watched titles. But Japan has always been an outlier when it comes to esports viewership. Traditional titles like CS:GO and League of Legends often do not generate as much viewership as Western countries.

Apex Legends and fighting games are much more popular in Japan than in a lot of other countries and we also see niche titles with one-off events gain massive viewership. But the trend is slowly changing as esports organizations like ZETA Division, Crazy Raccoon, and REJECT are drawing sizeable viewership numbers to traditional esports titles.

The Valorant Champions Tour’s Japan Challengers event this year saw over 291,700 viewers tune in. Game Changers Japan also received over 2 million total views throughout the event. Japan was known for its fighting game community but it looks like the audience has started opening up to other titles as esports continues to expand in the country.
