Krafton has officially announced Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) will be making a return and we can expect access to the game soon. However, this does not mean that the game is completely unbanned. According to a tweet by India’s Union Minister of State for Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Skill Development, Electronics & Technology the highly anticipated return of BGMI is a three-month trial approval after which the Indian government will decide if the game can continue its operations.
The Government of India will keep a close watch on BGMI
According to the Union Minister, the government will keep a close watch on other issues of “user harm and addiction” in the next three months before a final decision is taken regarding the game’s unban.
Krafton has not announced when exactly the game will make a return, but its release on Android and iOS is “imminent”. The Indian esports industry suffered greatly due to BGMI’s ban and no other title was able to match the hype that Krafton’s battle royale brought to the market.
According to Krafton, the company is emphasizing its "India-first" approach as the cornerstone of all of its efforts. The company aims to invest in the Indian gaming industry, contribute to a vibrant ecosystem that fosters growth and innovation, and collaborate with local developers to enhance technological advancements.
The reasons behind the ban on the game was attributed to the sovereignty or integrity of India, the defense of India, and the security of the state under Section 69A of the Indian IT Act. The government is likely to keep a close eye on BGMI’s data collection processes and server activity before it gives the game a green signal.
If things go well and the game is cleared for regular operations following the three-month trial, it will be a huge win for the Indian esports community.
