The biggest Pokemon Unite tournament to take place in India, Pokemon Unite India Open 2022, organized by Skyesports, concluded with Gods Reign lifting the trophy in front of a live audience in Goregaon, Mumbai.
After almost two months of Pokemon Unite action, the grassroots tournament which provided aspiring players a chance to go up against some of the best teams from across India has concluded, following an exciting Playoff stage.
A total of 14 teams started out in the National Playoffs stage, only four teams managing to qualify for the National Finals, which took place on LAN as part of the Skyesports Championship 4.0 in Mumbai on 24th December.
The best-of-seven grand final clash almost went the distance, coming to an end with a '4-2' scoreline favoring Gods Reign who had to fight hard against a challenging Revenant Esports.
Gods Reign have been crowned as the champions of Pokemon Unite India Open 2022
The massive event featuring a total prize pool of INR 22,50,000 ($27,165 USD) was divided into four main stages - Zonal Qualifiers, Zonal Finals, National Playoffs, and National Finals, striking a balance between new teams getting a chance to showcase their skills without compromising on the overall competitive skill of this tournament.
National Playoffs was the stage where teams from the six different zones joined hands with the eight directly invited teams. A tough battle ensued as teams took on each other in this round-robin group stage where every match was a best-of-five series.
Eight teams in total, four from each group, qualified to the National Playoffs stage, going head-to-head in a double-elimination bracket with the top four teams set to compete on LAN in Mumbai.
Gods Reign, Revenant Esports, Marcos Gaming, and S8UL Esports, were greeted with a round of applause by the live audience present at the venue to witness all the action unfold live on stage.
The final day action started with the upper bracket final where Gods Reign dropped down to the lower bracket and Revenant Esports became the first team to qualify for the grand final.
It is not easy being the crowd favorites but S8UL soaked in all the added pressure brilliantly, winning the lower bracket semifinal with a clean sweep against Marcos Gaming. However, the celebration of this victory was short lived as Gods Reign handed them a '3-2' defeat in the lower bracket final, setting up a revenge face-off against Revenant Esports.
This time Gods Reign was in better control of the situation and executed its plan more efficiently. It was still a tough fight with Revenant Esports not ready to give an inch, but the players kept their calm, taking one game at a time and coming through victorious with a '4-2' series scoreline.
Gods Reign end the year on a winning high, becoming the top Pokemon Unite team from India following this victory. They walk into 2023 more confident than ever before and will be looking to build further on this momentum.
They have already managed to qualify for the upcoming Pokemon UNITE Asia Champions League 2023 along with four other teams including Revenant Esports. It will be interesting to see how the Indian teams perform against international teams next year.
