Call of Duty (COD) is one of the most popular video game franchises in gaming history. We saw multiple Call of Duty titles for Nintendo DS in the past, but we have not seen modern titles make it to the Nintendo Switch, which is the most popular handheld console right now. But it looks like Call of Duty will be making a return to Nintendo consoles as Microsoft has entered a ten-year agreement with Call of Duty.
Call of Duty is coming to the Nintendo Switch
According to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, Microsoft will bring Call of Duty to Nintendo consoles following the merger of Microsoft and Activision Blizzard King. Call of Duty titles will continue to be available on Steam and will not be restricted to Xbox consoles or the Xbox PC app.
While it is great news for fans, many are concerned that the current Call of Duty titles will not be properly optimized for the Switch. The Nintendo versions of the COD games are very likely to have graphical downgrades or we may receive exclusive titles that are fine-tuned for the Switch hardware.
Last year, Microsoft Corp. announced its plans to acquire Activision Blizzard Inc in an all-cash transaction that is valued at $68.7 billion USD. The deal which is yet to be fully closed will see Microsoft pay $95 per share to buy out Activision, Blizzard, and King studios and their IPs including Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, Call of Duty, and Candy Crush. In addition to the gaming IPs, Microsoft will also gain access to the global esports IP Major League Gaming (MLG).
When is Call of Duty coming to Nintendo Switch?
A release date is currently unavailable but we can expect more information after Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard King is complete. The deal has raised concerns within regulatory bodies across the world and the acquisition is currently pending clearance.
