Is 3rd Person Mode Removed in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2?

The 3rd Person mode is a multiplayer playlist that was featured in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. The 3rd person Moshpit mode in Call of Duty MW2 was removed from Modern Warfare 2 on 26th January 2023, leaving fans baffled. The same mode was removed from Warzone 2.0 on 12th January. Fans are disappointed with this move by the developers and are already asking for it to come back, with some pointing out that they specifically bought MW2 to play the 3rd person Moshpit mode.

It is unclear as to why Activision removed the 3rd person mode from Modern Warfare 2 at the moment. Many fans are speculating that it could be due to a lack of players or because it splits the fanbase.

What is 3rd person mode in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2?

In Modern Warfare 2, 3rd person mode was available in various modes featuring two teams of six players. Unlike the previous games, however, the camera was put in first-person view when aiming down sight regardless of the weapon used. In Warzone 2, the 3rd Person Mode was a playable mode that could only be played on the Trios modes.

While there is no confirmation on when the mode will be back again in the two games, it is possible that it could be rotated in and out of the game by the developers in an attempt to keep the game fresh and interesting. So fans can keep an eye out for 3rd person mode’s return when the next playlist drops or when Season 2 launches. Note that playlist updates usually roll out every Thursday.

Reddit user LeoSosa wrote, “I can't stand the fact that they removed 3rd person from multiplayer. They literally sold the game advertising for the return of third-person gameplay and me and other people based our decision to buy it on that too. It was basically my main mode for me and my friends. This is a scam.

Another Redditor pointed out that it makes no sense to remove the mode since 3rd person players are more incentivized to buy operator skins since they can actually see their operators, and added that Infinity Ward has always cared about selling skins. They added, “Also, 3rd person would definitely be more popular if they just gave us more game type and map options for it. Even in its limited form, it was the only playlist my friends and I have played since launch (and the only reason we bought the game in the first place).

The Redditor reasoned that removing 3rd person from the game is not the same as rotating out a random map or a game type but it is the equivalent of removing an entire game.

Players should note that you can still play third-person in private games. To play Mdoern Warfare 2 in 3rd person mode in a Private Match, you need to create a private match and go to match settings where you can navigate to the ‘Player’ Tab to find ‘Third Person View.’

Here’s how you do it:

  • Go to Private Match and create one.

  • Select the mode you want to play.

  • Head over to Game Setup and select Game Rules.

  • Note that if the Game Setup option is locked, you will have to wait a few seconds for the Game Code to generate. Following this, it should unlock. If it still does not, you can select CODCASTER and press back.

  • Press the R1/RB twice and go to the Player option menu.

  • Under Player, scroll to Third Person View.

  • Here, you can change Third Person View to all players or just one specific team.
