TSM’s former captain now turned head coach David "MoonMeander" Tan became the latest member of the team to be pulled aside for a post-match interview following its sixth consecutive victory in Division I of the North American Dota Pro Circuit 2023 (NA DPC 2023): Winter Tour.
During the interview, the Canadian coach talked about his newly found responsibilities as a coach amongst other things. Additionally, he also took the time to talk about the team's new roster following his transition from a player to the team’s head coach.
MoonMeander noted that his transition from playing to coaching has been smooth
During the winner’s post match interview, TSM’s MoonMeander started off by talking about the team’s new roster. In the off-season, TSM underwent major roster changes as Kim "DuBu" Doo-young & Jonáš "SabeRLight-" Volek departed from the team on top of MoonMeander transitioning into a coaching position. However, they were able to recruit new talent in the form of Ilyas "kasane" Gainullin, Matthew “Ari” Walker & Matthew “Whitemon” Filemon.
MoonMeander noted that the team needs more time together as some of the players lacked experience playing at the highest level of competitive Dota. “I think what we need the most is experience. So far, the guys lack the experience [of playing at a high level]. For some of them, the upcoming major will be their first LAN event.” he said.
He added on by saying that he had to adjust the team’s playstyle to accommodate the new recruits before saying that the results turned out to be a success. “You can't say that there was an adjustment, because the roster essentially has changed completely with three new players. It was more of an adjustment on drafting to my players’ strength. The old guard, Timado and Bryle also had to adjust their playstyle to adapt with the newcomers. I think overall, I think I found the winning recipe to make the team work. ”
He then went on to explain his newly found responsibilities as a coach, however he noted that his duties are almost identical to his time as a captain. “It’s not that hard. Because for the past two years, I used to watch replays, do some math on drafting and stuff, and do all of that in parallel with the game. I played a lot of games, trying to set a good example for my team.”
Additionally, he also noted that his health issues became a primary reason behind his transition. However, he said that he enjoyed coaching the new generation of players. “It was taking a toll on my health and my back was hurting, even though I warmed up a lot. I realized I couldn't do that for another year. But now I'm a coach, so I don't have to compete and train my laning a lot. It's easier to coach. There's a lot less pressure on me, I'm happy with life. Everything is fine, wonderful. It works especially well when you have a strong team and you're coaching powerful players.”
