Azure Ray has qualified for The International 12 (TI12) after taking down Xtreme Gaming in the grand finals of the Chinese qualifier. Azure Ray secured a 3-1 victory through its late game teamfight execution and decision making, after a thrilling final series where both teams had great chances of winning. This is a remarkable achievement for the team as it has shown tremendous progress after coming together just a few months back in May 2023. Azure Ray now stands as the second Chinese team to compete at TI12 along with PSG.LGD, although this represents a reduction in Chinese representation compared to past tournaments.
Azure Ray takes down Xtreme Gaming to qualify for TI12
After Team Aster was eliminated in the lower bracket by Team Bright, Azure Ray and Xtreme Gaming, became the top picks for the TI12 qualifier spot from China.
Azure defeated Xtreme in the upper bracket final before the latter set up a rematch in the grand final. It was a tense battle from the start, as Xtreme Gaming blew a massive lead in the first game but then showed amazing grit in the second to tie the series at 1-1.
Given that it was the grand final for the last chance to go to TI12, both teams had to tread carefully, resulting in games that were much tighter than usual.
Game 3 was another stellar contest in which both teams focused on their carry heroes and teamfights were extremely close. Azure had the heroes and the items to shut down the opponent Phantom Assassin in the latter stages, which allowed the team to grab a 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth and final game, Xtreme appeared to have made a weaker draft as it picked a roster that was sluggish and lacking in damage. Azure took advantage of this and played quickly to win the series' quickest game in 30 minutes.
Azure had a disciplined campaign in TI12's China qualifier, despite losing a couple games, with the team knowing exactly what it wanted to achieve. Even though it has some of the best Dota 2 players in the region, it has not been easy for any new team to rise to the occasion, particularly in China.
Azure debuted in May 2023 after obtaining Ybb Gaming's spot and finished fourth in the regional league, qualifying for the Bali Major. The squad had also been Xtreme Gaming's kryptonite in the league, defeating the team in the tiebreaker to claim the fourth and last spot for the Major.
The Azure Ray playstyle was evidently inexperienced and lacked the coherence associated with more experienced teams during the Bali Major. As a result, the squad put in a lot of effort during the break and won the Chinese qualifier.
With this qualification, LGD Gaming's old roster players Lu "Somnus" Yao, Yang "Chalice" Shenyi, and Xu "fy" Linsen, will once again return to Dota 2's biggest stage together, this time as Azure Ray. TI12 will take place in October 2023.
