How to Fix Overwatch 2 “Different Version” Error

Blizzard Entertainment can’t catch a break as Overwatch 2’s launch woes continue to build up. From DDoS attacks to broken Ultimate abilities, the game is in a state of chaos and players are running into new problems every day. While the player experience is a lot better now compared to the first two days of release, Overwatch 2 still has a long way to go. One of the newest errors plaguing the game is the “Different version of Overwatch 2” error which is preventing players from queuing up with their friends.

Overwatch 2 “Different version” error: How to Fix

Sometimes the game alerts you that you or your friends are on different versions of Overwatch 2 when you try to group up. Even though the game tells you that you and your friends are running different versions of the game, it might not be true. There is an ongoing bug that is causing the issue and Blizzard is currently investigating it.

Before you use any workarounds, confirm if you are on the latest patch to ensure your game is not bugged. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Open the Battle.net desktop app.

2. Click the icon of the game you are trying to repair.

3. Click the cogwheel next to the Play button and select Check for Updates.

Console users can logout of the game and hop back in to see if the issue persists. If you are still getting the “Different version of Overwatch 2” error simply use the in-game chat commands to invite or join your friends.

2. Type “/invite” or “/join”

3. Add a space and start typing your friend’s name

It should now allow you to invite your friend or join them directly without using the social menu.

There is no word on when the issue will be fixed and players will need to wait until Blizzard deploys a fix. While using chat commands is a temporary fix, not everyone who plays the game knows how to use them and it can be frustrating to not be able to play the game with your friends.
