LCK Poised to Lift Worlds 2022 Trophy After 2 Years

Two teams are left standing on the international stage, their eyes set on the prize: the League of Legends Worlds 2022 trophy. The League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) has proven itself to be the best region this year with two of its four representatives making it to the grand final of Worlds 2022. Storied organization T1 and its Korean counterpart DRX will face each other in an enthralling best-of-five series on 5th November. Regardless of the winner, the LCK will cement itself as arguably the best region in League of Legends esports with a total of seven trophies under its belt.

LCK’s performance at Worlds 2022

The LCK had four teams representing the region at the start of Worlds 2022: DRX, Damwon Kia (DK), T1, and Gen.G. While DRX had to play through the opening stage of Play-in at Worlds 2022, the other three teams were split into different groups in the Group Stage of the main event. The Group Stage results foreshadowed the dominance of Korean teams at the tournament. Notably, all four teams earned a top-two finish in their respective groups and punched their slots into the quarterfinals.

T1 obliterated Royal Never Give Up (RNG) in the quarterfinal matchup with a 3-0 scoreline and DRX also pulled off a 3-2 victory against last Worlds winner EDward Gaming (EDG). However, it became clear that the region would lose one team in the quarters as GEN.G and DK were matched together. Both the teams gave it their all in the match-up and GEN.G won the series by inches with a 3-2 scoreline.

Following this, the semi-final results were also heavily Korea-favored. T1’s dominance continued as the team won against JD Gaming (JDG) in the first semi-finals with a 3-1 score. The bot lane of T1 played exceptionally well and proved that the team is worthy of a final spot at Worlds 2022.

DRX reverse-swept reigning World champion team EDG in the last quarter-final of Worlds 2022 to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

In the second semi-final, tournament favorite GEN.G suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of DRX. Notably, DRX came into the competition as the region’s fourth seed after fighting for its life in the LCK regional finals. GEN.G, on the other hand, was Korea’s number one seed and the team had a dominant showing in the summer split, where it upset T1.

T1’s Worlds comeback vs DRX’s fairytale run

After losing in the semi-finals in both 2019 and 2021, T1 finally broke through that barrier and made it to the finals of Worlds 2022. This will be the team’s (including SK Telecom T1 records) fifth grand final appearance. T1 won Worlds in 2013, 2015, and 2016, and placed second in 2017, after losing to Samsung Galaxy. For DRX, Worlds 2022 is hands-down its best run. For the first time in Worlds history, a Play-in team has managed to make it to the grand final.

Fans will witness the clash between the titans: T1 and DRX on 5th November in the grand finals of Worlds 2022 at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California.
