Riot Games is planning to introduce an array of quality-of-life updates to League of Legends and the company briefed about some of the features that the Game Loop team has been working on. In a recent developer update, Game Loop Product Lead Chris "Riot Auberaun" Roberts talked about changes to ranked queues that could potentially reduce dodging problems including champion select anonymity. The Game Loop team in League of Legends is responsible for things that contribute to and affect a player’s experience including matchmaking, champion select, and the various Summoner’s Rift queue types.
Riot Auberaun said, “We’re exploring several updates to Champion Select functionality that we think will upgrade the experience in ways that haven’t been touched in a while. Optimistically, we’ll be getting these out by the end of the year.”
What’s coming next?
Champion Select Anonymity
The champion select anonymity is the first and most important feature planned by Riot Games for League of Legends. Players generally log on to third-party websites like OP.GG to look up stats and information about their teammates and draw conclusions that are not always right.
Riot Games felt that the best version of League is not one where players metagame based on others int he lobby and bank on the win rates of teammates playing on their one-trick champions.
“We’re still thinking about details of implementation here, but our starting point is likely to be hiding all Summoner names in Champion Select for Ranked Solo/Duo,” said Auberaun. Hiding Summoner names will likely reduce the number of dodges during champion select.
Pick Order Swapping
Pick Order Swapping is a feature that already exists in Wild Rift and players have been requesting this one in League of Legends for years. Riot hopes that by letting teams swap pick order with the press of a button, the process of creating a perfect draft also gets streamlined in champion select.
Loadout Recommender
Just like the in-game item recommendations, Riot Games is planning to provide rune and Summoner Spell recommendations during champ select.
“This should help narrow the gap between players who are comfortable with the rune and Summoner Spell systems and those who aren’t. We want to reduce barriers to entry and ensure players have the best possible experience with the runes system when initially ramping up on the game.”
